I had the great fun of photographing two newly adopted baby boys last week. Their proud parents reveled in every moment.

This is a bittersweet time of the year for me. Since not many brides get married in the frigid month of January, high school seniors are waiting for warm weather, and families have completed their holiday get-togethers, this is not a busy time for photography. It is, however, that delightful time of the year to organize files and info from last year, get information ready for filing taxes, and try to "unclutter" my life, by cleaning closets, sorting through clothes, and making several donations to Goodwill

This is also the month when brides from last year finally have time to select their favorite images from their wedding so I can, at last, work on designing their wedding album.

All in all, I enjoy January. Both my birthday and our daughter's fall in this month, so it is a month of preparing for the year ahead, and celebrating!

Pets and other family members

As you know, I photograph a lot of horses and horse shows, but I photograph all kinds of other animals too.
Clients are sometimes surprised that I enjoy including their pets in the family photo. Aren't they part of the family? Of course!

There is a family that I have photographed for about 9 years, starting with the parent's wedding, now them with their children. For several years in a row, I asked if they would like their small dog to be in the portrait. Each year the answer was no-the dog needed groomed, they didn't want her to shed on their outfits, etc. Last time that I photographed the family, the parents confided that they were so sorry that they didn't add their dog to their portrait the previous year, as the little dog died over the summer. How sad!
In October I set a personal record for the number of dogs, five, in a portrait--all cooperating and with ears perked up. Thought I would share a few recent family portraits-furry family members included!

Christmas time is family time

What do people try to save on their way out of a house fire? After making sure family members get out, they want family portraits. What are people thrilled to find in the wreckage after a tornado? Family portraits. Why do we treasure those pictures? They remind us of shared love-memories evoked when we see that wedding photo of our grandparents, or we smile seeing ourselves in that young, awkward stage.

When all of your loved ones are gathered in your home, or you in theirs this holiday season, make sure to take photos. They are proof of moments shared in the company of those we treasure, to remind us of that bond when we are later separated-by distance, by death.

(On a practical note: when you are taking down the Christmas decorations, take an extra few minutes to download those photos from your camera. Email them to family members, print your favorites and put them in an album, burn them to a CD and then store the CD in your safe deposit box, or upload the images to your Cloud account, or somewhere else to ensure that you have an off-site copy.)

My vocation as a professional photographer gives me the wonderful blessing of photographing many families this time of year. I take this responsibility seriously, as I photograph not only for those here today, but for those yet to come.

It seems each day is busier than the one before. That's why I try to take the time to thank friends and family who go the extra mile, with a handwritten note-so they can slow down for a moment and know that they are appreciated.

When I get a thank you note from someone, I treasure it. Recently I received the following from clients. I share these, not to give myself a "pat on the back", but to let you know how seriously I take my job as a professional wedding photographer.

Edye, I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated your work at the wedding of Lindsay and Ronnie. You helped make everything run on schedule and you did it so effortlessly. Weddings...continued

Let's see, oh yes! Photos from the wedding at St. Vincent de Paul! The bride and groom traveled from the church to the reception in an extremely unique Kansas State party van-complete with the K-State fight song played on the horn. Congratulations to Marcy and John!

Our final October wedding was at the University Methodist Church in Wichita. My assistant photographer and I met the bride, groom and wedding party at a fun, funky park in downtown Wichita. The bride and her attendant gracefully exited the limo, and we got great pictures of the pre-planned moment that the groom saw his bride for the first time on their wedding day.

After the outdoor photo session on that perfect autumn afternoon, everyone traveled to the church for formal portraits with their families, then the lovely ceremony.

Following the ceremony it was off to the 2oth Century Center for an elegant reception and dinner. Congratulations and best wishes to Brittany and Austin!

Popular month for weddings

Traditionally, many think of June as the "big wedding month". For several years, October has been extremely popular, too. Perhaps due to the cooler weather, or autumn colors or maybe because there are no major holidays during October to work around.

This October, I started the month in Emporia with the wedding of Chandry and Brandon. They had a beautiful, formal wedding at the Presbyterian Church, then headed to the reception for a '"kickin' country" reception.

The second weekend of October I was in downtown Wichita at the 2oth Century Center for the wedding of Cydney and Chris. Their wedding was in the parlor, jam packed with friends and family. After the ceremony, they walked downstairs for their elegant reception. Despite the rain that evening, the newlyweds and guests had an amazing celebration.

The next October wedding was held at St. Vincent de Paul in Andover. Marcy and John had all of their formal photos taken before the ceremony, then took the time to greet their guests as they arrived at the church. What a wonderful touch! Immediately after the ceremony, the newlyweds hopped into a "Power Cat" K-State van, which played the Kansas State University fight song on their way to the reception at Andover's Central Park. Pictures? Definitely! Be patient though...they will be added soon!

Brittany and Austin were also married in October-more about their special day later...

It's that time of year...just finished up photographing all of the horse shows at the Kansas State Fair, still editing the final set of backdrop photos to add to the arena shots already on the website. Had the honor of photographing two weddings in September, also, so each day is very full!

This past Friday, I enjoyed photographing Dustin and Julie's engagement portraits. Started with portraits with the two of them with their horses and dog, then they changed clothes and we all went to the Keeper of the Plains area along the Arkansas River for more formal portraits. Dustin was in his military uniform, and it was wonderful to hear several people share their appreciation of his service to our country.

Looking ahead, I will be photographing the Hope in the Heartland Quarter Horse show this weekend, as well as a drive to Emporia to photograph Chandry and Brandon's wedding on Saturday evening.

Even though I feel that I am meeting myself coming and going these days, I am truly blessed--I love what I do!

Kansas State Fair time

Kansans have survived one of the hottest summers on record, and are looking toward having a lot of fun at the "Party on the Prairie", also know as the State Fair, Sept. 9-18 in Hutchinson.

As the official horse show photographer for the Ks. State Fair for the past 11 years, I have a lot of experience with life on the fairgrounds. Pronto pups. Giant drumsticks. Huge corn on the cob. Been there, ate that!

I have to say that my favorite part of the fair is simply watching people. It's awesome to see spectators get engrossed in watching the draft horse pull, or the mule show obstacle/trail course, or the miniature driving class, or, well-you get the idea.

If you plan on attending the State Fair party this year, stop by the horse show arena on the southeast corner of the grounds and say hello!

Breanna and David

On July 23, Breanna and David were married at the Civic Center in El Dorado. With a hot pink shirt under his black tux, the groom was as striking as his bride.

Since the Civic Center is a little on the plain side for unique photos, the newlyweds decided to brave the nearly 108 degree summer weather and head to a nearby park for some outdoor portraits. We were there less than 10 minutes and got a lot of cool shots...then they were back to the reception without their guests noticing the brief absence!

Congratulations to you both-I had a great time photographing you!

Region 8 Experience

Two weeks ago I had the honor of photographing the AQHA (American Quarter Horse Assn. for my non-horsey readers), Region 8 Championship Show. This Region is comprised of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico and their were competitors from every state. We even had a few of our other neighbors represented, including Missouri and Nebraska. It was a three day event, held at the Pavilions at the Coliseum in Wichita.

I enjoyed the entire show (despite the heat!), but my favorite day was the first day, June 24th...it offered the most exciting photo opportunities. Events range from heading and heeling to reining, working cowhorse, western riding, poles and barrels-lots of action is packed into day one!

It was a great event and I invite those who might be interested to take the time to show, or at least go watch when Region 8 2012 rolls around. Beautiful awards, relaxed atmosphere, fantastic horses and wonderful horse people to hang out with for three days...what's not to love?!?

Molly & Pippin

Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson, Kansas was the place to be for the wedding of Molly and Pippin. This wonderful couple met when they were young kids in dance classes, and have known one another about 15 years! They complement each other perfectly.

After the wedding, while their guests were walking to the church hall for the reception, we took a few minutes to drive to a nearby park for some outdoor portraits. A light breeze and the beaming smiles of the newlyweds made for some great shots!

Molly's mom is an amazing seamstress, as she made both the wedding gown and veil. The gown was as practical as it was beautiful, with a detachable train for the reception.

Pippin and Molly are students at the University of Kansas-I wish them much success and happiness!

The end of May I loaded my camera equipement and drove west to Colorado for the wedding of Savanna and Chris. We began photos at Garden of the Gods, on the edge of Colorado Springs. That was the first time I've ever had a wedding party have to get off the trail so that a string of horses could go by!

After some unique photos with Pike's Peak in the background, and with the "kissing camels" rock formation in a few others, we headed over to Briarhurst Manor in Manitou Springs for the wedding ceremony. It was a beautiful location for the ceremony! The reception was in the Conservatory there. The bride had selected a butterfly theme and the wedding cake and decorations were extremely unique and creative.

Chris and Savanna were a lot of fun to photograph, and quite willing to hike around for unique photos...I wish them many, many years of fun together!

Kennetta & Jeremy

April Fool's Day seems an unlikely day to select for a wedding, but that was the date chosen by Kennetta and Jeremy...and with their lively sense of humor, it was perfect! Their wedding was held in the "theater" of the 20th Century Club in downtown Wichita. Afterward, everyone headed to the lower level for their reception.

Jeremy made jaws drop when he grabbed the microphone during the reception to say, "Thought this would be a great time to share some happy news-we are expecting a baby!" After gasps and then applause, Jeremy smiled and said, "April Fool's! We couldn't get married on April 1st without at least one big joke!" The expressions were priceless.

Congratulations to Jeremy and Kennetta and best wishes for many years of laughter.

It's YOUR Wedding

Just read an article on the latest designs of Disney inspired wedding gowns. The dresses are even named after your favorite characters, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, and others. Recently Costco began offering wedding gowns at wonderfully reduced prices. Happily, there are still bridal shops owned by individuals with a passion for helping you to find, and then to fit, the perfect wedding dress. The choices are limitless!

I was thinking back to a visit to a bridal salon last summer. I watched as a plus-size bride tried on dress after dress that her mom and sister chose for her. Finally, she gained permission from them to try on her favorite. As she emerged from the dressing room, she was already saying, "I feel like a princess! This is exactly what I dreamed of!" You could see it in her face, she knew that she had found "The Dress", and she was beaming.

The mom gave her daughter a quick look, and pronounced the dress "...absolutely dreadful for your figure...". Her sister didn't acknowledge her comments at all, but instead pushed the bride-to-be back toward the dressing room to "try on that first one we picked out" again.

Sadly, our heroine took a last resigned look at herself in the "Dress of her Dreams", and obediently went back to the dressing room to remove it.

OMG! Please remember that YOU are the one getting married! Not your mom, your sister, your future mother-in-law, or your BFF! You don't need to go all "Bridezilla", but gently remind everyone that it is YOUR day, your once-in-a-timetime, been dreaming about it since I was a little girl day. If you want to wear a "Cinderella" or "Ariel" or "Famous Designer", or even your grandmother's wedding dress, remember that famous ad slogan: JUST DO IT! It's YOUR wedding!

Misc. Stuff

This is a unique time of year...a little early for senior portraits and not exactly a picturesque time to have a wedding. There are a lot of other things happening though: winter dances, charity events, basketball teams, promotional shots and catalogue photos. In recent weeks these are a few of the things/events I have photographed: 10 pairs of cowboy boots for a website and print ad, the Flinthills High School SnowBall dance, the El Dorado Charities Auxiliary Hollywood evening, a boys basketball team, classes at a church, and my personal favorite...a pet rabbit for Valentine's Day cards!

Erin and Justin's Wedding

On November 20th, Erin and Justin were married at East Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita. It was a beautiful ceremony! After the ceremony, the pastor asked all of the guests to turn and face the balcony so that we could take a photo of everyone witnessing their marriage vows. How cool!

For the reception, we all headed over to the Cowtown Visitors Center. Steve with Advanced DJ Service provided the entertainment, and Tinley with Jubilation Events kept things running smoothly-it was a perfect evening.

Erin's parents were told when she was born that she would probably never be able to walk, drive a car, or live independently, due to some problems that she had. However, with much perserverance and love, Erin is a beautiful, capable young woman with an exciting life ahead of her. Congratulations, Erin and Justin!

Autumn!

This is my favorite time of year. I love the autumn colors bursting everywhere-from orange pumpkins to multicolored gourds to red maples! With the cooler weather, this is also the perfect time of year for family portraits. In addition to the bright outdoor colors, there is the added benefit of having plenty of time to choose and order your favorite photos for holiday gifts or Christmas cards! Three little words...Kansas State Fair. Eleven days of horse shows to photograph in Hutchinson, Kansas. I get to see my "horse friends" from every horse genre in the region-from miniatures to draft horses, from Arabians to stock horses to mules. Time flies!

What an exciting summer! In addition to my always busy schedule of photographing high school seniors, families, weddings, meeting with clients, and all of the other things that make the days zoom past, on July 30 our daughter, Jordan got married.

Twenty years of photographing weddings didn't prepare me for what it was like to be on the "other side" of a wedding. From going with Jordan to look at wedding gowns, to meeting with the florist, etc., it was all different from the "mother of the bride" perspective.

I have always encouraged my wedding clients to relax and ENJOY the wedding day. Most often, I get an eye roll, or a disbelieving stare...like relaxing and enjoying the wedding day are two things not on the list of possibilities.

From the start though, that was our goal. Happily, we were successful! We made it a point to savor and treasure each moment throughout the day-from getting hair done to lacing up Jordan's wedding gown, to watching her dad walk her down the aisle of the Cathedral. We took the time to greet and visit with family and friends at the reception, to taste the wedding cake, to truly listen to the toasts, and to take the time for a special dance with my husband during the reception. When the DJ announced the last dance, and we heard a collective disappointed sigh and moans from our guests that the evening was nearly over, we knew we were successful! My only regret? That we can't do it all again soon! Congratulations, Jordan and Jarrod! We love you!

Saturday I met with Erin and Jarrod regarding their December 4th wedding. They are in the early stages of planning their wedding, and haven't decided yet if they will be married in Wellington or at St. John's in El Dorado. I've recently been working with Tara and Rob in laying out their wedding album. They were married last summer at Central Christian Church, reception at Tallgrass Country Club. Their wedding album is going to be awesome! I love how they chose the "goofy pic", as they call it, of their entire wedding party!

This time of year I spend a lot of time working on wedding albums from the previous year's weddings. Following the wedding, couples are usually too busy for 3-6 months to have time to pick out their favorite images for their album. Once we have gotten through the busy holiday season, I start getting calls and emails about album choices.

Ok, I admit it. I have been busy and haven't updated my blog in a while. Family get-togethers for Thanksgiving, then we are picking out a special tree at Prairie Pines Christmas Tree Farm, then ...it's all a blur! I have a lot of blessings to count!

Got back from a family weekend in Kansas City with just enough time to head to Peabody to photograph the Mellott family. On Christmas Eve day, my 4 wheel drive got me through the snowstorm to Amanda's grandmother's house to photograph her family while they were all together. The day after Christmas, I headed north to photograph the Cooper family. It is truly an honor to photograph such terrific families--thank you!

May 30, 2010

Prairie Rose is the location and May 30 is the date for the wedding of Christy and Scott. They will have a large wedding party, with six attendants on each side. Since they both enjoy horses, following the ceremony they will take a buggy ride to have some "new husband and wife" time, as well as get some fun pictures with them and their horses on the grounds of the Prairie Rose.

Their wedding plans are coming along well, with Totally Legal Sound and Lighting as the DJ entertainment for the reception.

In addition to their busy jobs in the sheriff's department, Christy and Scott run a charity to benefit children and families. I was very impressed with this selfless couple and can't wait to photograph their wedding!

Michelle's senior portraits

With all of the awful October weather this year: cold rain, drizzling rain, misting rain and lots of wind, I was keeping my fingers crossed that October 24 would be a nice day...happily, it was BEAUTIFUL!

Michelle had a fantastic day for her senior portrait session. We started with traditional portraits at her home, including several shots of just her flute and band uniform to make a unique collage later.

Next we headed to Oak Park in Riverside. Working between the disc golfers, we got some great photos! (Michelle, I had no idea someone could hike in high heels like you did!)

After graduation next spring, Michelle will start college at WSU, with plans to go into International Business. Congratulations, Michelle-have a fantastic senior year!

Horse Shows!

Whew! September was a blur of horses, horse shows and more horses! I had a great time photographing the Five Star Futurity in Lincoln, Nebraska, then the 11 days of horse shows at the Kansas State Fair.

Congratulations to all of the exhibitors-the weather was mild and the horse shows went smoothly.

Kelsey, Five Star Futurity and the Ks. State Fair!

Last Thursday I went to Dannebrog, Nebraska. Why? To photograph my niece, Kelsey, for her senior portrait. Thursday night we ate the world's great pizza at a little place in downtown Dannebrog. Friday morning we were rested and ready to take a lot of photos! I photographed Kelsey with her mom, (my sister, Amye), with her brother (my nephew, Kaleb), her dog, her cat, her misc. horses, at an old barn, among the sunflowers, along the river, beside a fence, in their yard, leaning against her horse, laying on her horse, and a lot more! We had a blast and I was honored to photograph Kelsey...she is a beautiful young woman.

After Kelsey's portrait session I headed to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Five Star Futurity. The horse show staff put on a fantastic show there. Saturday was spent photographing their futurity, along with a few horses and their owners who wandered over from the Quarter Horse show going on next door. The Five Star wrapped up about 7:45pm, and I was loaded and headed south by 8:30 (thanks to Tag for helping me load up my backdrop and equipment!).

Almost six hours later my canine companion, Freckles, and I were at a hotel in Hutchinson, Kansas ready for a few precious hours of sleep. We were up at 7am and ready to photograph the Appaloosa/KSHA show, the first show of the Kansas State Fair. Whew!

Tomorrow is the first official day of the Kansas State Fair where I will be photographing the Palomino Horse show. I will be there for every day and every horse show throughout the Fair. If you are in Hutchinson, Kansas during September 11-20, please stop by the horse barn on the fairgrounds and say hello!

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita was the beautiful location for the August 8th wedding of Meghan and Brandon. Moore Flowers created the bouquets, wrist corsages and boutonnieres for the wedding party and family, and the bridesmaids dresses were purchased at Uniquely You Bridal.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds exited between the church columns and down the steps to the waiting limo from Artistic Limousine. Following a short drive, they arrived at Botanica, Wichita's botanical garden. After a few fun photos with the entire wedding party by the fountain, everyone headed inside for their formal introductions and then the cutting of the cake.

Harriet Harris made the wedding and groom's cakes, and Corporate Caterers provided the dinner for the guests. Entertainment was provided by Steve of Advanced DJ Service.

Meghan and Brandon met while in high school. They are so comfortable and happy together-I wish them many, many years of happiness-congratulations!

Palomino Horse Show

On Sunday, August 16, I photographed the Palomino Horse Exhibitors of Kansas (PHEK)horse show held in Kingman, Kansas. In addition to the wonderful facility, there is a lovely park and river adjoining the show grounds. It makes for some picturesque portraits!

This photo is of Amberly with her horse, "Vegas", and her 2 1/2 year old daughter. Don't they look like they are enjoying their time together?

Pride of the Prairie Pinto Show

July 25-26 in Hutchinson was the place to be for the regional Pride of the Prairie Pinto Show. Horses from Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and other states were there competing for state and national points, circuit championships and High Point awards. I have been photographing the Pride of the Prairie show for about seven years, and I really enjoy getting to see my Pinto horse friends and customers each year.

A challenging group photo was that of four dogs, four people and one horse. I was very pleased that ALL the canine and equine ears are up and forward as they should be. Another fun photo was of Katie and her horse. Katie let me "play" and get this head shot with her horse, sans bridle. Congratulations to each of the competitors!

Wendy and Owen

Owen and Wendy were married Saturday, July 25th at Northridge Friends Church in Wichita. Owen's dad told me that he had been an usher in that church for 25 years, and Owen's mom had been the wedding coordinator there. Needless to say, that church had been an integral part of their lives for all of Owen's life.

From Wendy's time getting ready prior to the ceremony, until she and Owen ran through rose petals (and jelly beans!) thrown by their family and friends as they left the reception, every detail went smoothly. Congratulations, Wendy and Owen!

Erin and Kyle

On Friday, July 24th, Erin and Kyle were married at St. Vincent de Paul church in Andover. They didn't want to see one another before the ceremony, so I photographed Erin and her family and her attendants first, then sent her back to the bride's room. Next, Kyle and his groomsmen headed outside for some casual photos in the courtyard. After the ceremony, we completed all the formal group photos, then headed to The Ville for their reception.

Erin's gown came from David's Bridal, Kyle's tux was from Men's Wearhouse, and the Flower Market was the floral designer. Cheri's Bakery made the cake, and Complete Music provided the entertainment and kept the reception rockin'!

Kristi and Geoff

July 11 at Harvest Community Church in west Wichita was the place to be for Kristi and Geoff's wedding. Geoff was calm and relaxed in his tux from Accent Bridal and Tux (even though the AC units had frozen up and the church was extremely warm!). Kristi wore a stunning gown from Reni's Bridal.

With five attendants each, Kristi and Geoff were surrounded by wonderful friends when they shared their vows. After the ceremony, they walked through a cloud of bubbles blown by their guests and then boarded the "Liquid Limo" party bus for the ride to Hawthorne Suites for the reception.

Ray's Catering provided the dinner, and FX Motion of Salina was the DJ entertainment for the evening. After a grand entrance and introduction at the reception, the newlyweds cut their cake (Geoff was a gentleman, but Kristi somehow managed to get a little cake and frosting on the face of her new husband!) Next they kicked off the celebration by throwing the bouquet and garter, and then settled into the serious task of eating dinner so they would be ready to DANCE!

A special request photo was one of Kristi with her grandparents and the other grandchildren. What better time to get everyone together for a photo, than when they are all dressed up for a wedding?

Geoff and Kristi are an exceptionally polite and caring couple. I truly enjoyed the honor of photographing their wedding. Congratulations to you both!

Ashley & Aaron

June 27 was the wedding day for Ashley and Aaron. Their wedding was held at the Hilton Garden Inn, on the patio overlooking the lake at Bradley Fair.

Ashley wore a flattering gown purchased at David's Bridal. Their flowers were from Flower Factory, and Artistic Cakes created their one of a kind wedding cake.

Aaron and Ashley had thought about every detail for their wedding day. The table place cards were origami birds, they provided a "wish jar" for friends to write best wishes to the bride and groom, and Aaron had even selected certain songs for specific portions of the reception.

Ordinarily, a flower girl younger than three years old can be a little contrary for her wedding responsibilities. However, the younger flower girl at Ashley and Aaron's wedding was the bride's baby sister, and at two years of age, was one of the most well behaved flower girls ever!

Ignoring the heat and humidity, the wonderful newlyweds let me take them on a short walk to get some great photos with the lake in the background. Thank you, Aaron and Ashley, and congratulations on your wedding-best wishes!

Melissa and Brian

June 20th started out to be a stormy day-a huge thunderstorm went through the area about an hour before wedding photos were to start. Happily though, Melissa and Brian were treated to blue skies and no rain for their wedding.

The wedding was held at Fulton Valley Farms "Boot Scootin' Barn" north of Augusta. Ron Reves was the DJ, the flowers were from Dillon's Floral Department, and the delicious cake was made by Jeanine Markley. Melissa's gown was purchased at David's Bridal. Brian's brother, Levi, officiated and made the ceremony very warm and personal for the bride and groom.

Even though the grounds were still wet from the rain showers, everyone cooperated to get some fun photos out on the grass beside the silo. Melissa and Brian had a great time celebrating their wedding. Congratulations and best wishes to you both!

Monica & Matt

On June 19th Monica and Matt had an enchanted wedding and reception at Eberly Farm in Wichita. Flowers and arrangements from Stem's provided an elegant floral backdrop for the evening. Cameo Cakes created a beautiful and delicious wedding cake, and All World DJ provided the reception entertainment. Monica's bridal gown was purchased at David's Bridal, and the wedding coordinator for the evening was Linda, the bride's aunt.

Matt designed and made a wrought iron garden bench with their initial in the center. It was the focal point for their ceremony, held in the pavilion at Eberly Farm. What a memorable keepsake from their wedding!

My favorite part of the day was during the reception, when the sun was just starting to set. The newlyweds agreed to take a few minutes away from their guests for some special photos of just the two of them. We went north of the pavilion to a lovely location with a curving path and trees. Just after we began taking portraits there, the sun shone through the trees with a magnificent warm glow. WOW! Gorgeous bride, handsome groom and perfect lighting all came together for some breath-taking portraits.

Monica and Matt have been dating for about 14 years. Their reception included a poignant slideshow, with photos beginning with the weddings of each of their parents, and continuing through their growing up years, dating, courtship and engagement. In my almost 20 years of photographing weddings, I don't know when I have seen a more perfectly matched couple. You hear the saying, "they were made for each other", but in this case, it is absolutely true! Congratulations, Monica and Matt!

I wish I could say that the photos speak for themselves, but they simply can not say enough. Her hard work and determination throughout the wedding day go far beyond the wonderful wedding photography she presented us with. Edye was only hired for two hours but she stayed far longer than that due to the chaos that ensued all day. After the wedding, I would be lying if I said I didn't have a sort of "buyer's regret" with my wedding day. My perfect dream wedding had not gone as planned and I was disappointed. However, the photos have given me perspective and a sense of humor - the photos certainly capture the best parts of the day and are absolutely beautiful. She wrote ALL my requests down and she followed through on every single one. I, personally, am always disappointed with pictures of myself. However, Edye did a great job finding moments when my beauty matched the happiness in my heart. She gave me the best wedding gift any newly-wed could ever ask for - wonderful and beautiful wedding photography. Finally, I have heard horror stories of couples who have never received their wedding pictures or that it took the photographer months to give them back. Eyde was a miracle worker - we had the CD of edited photos in our hands just over two weeks after our event. I recommend Edye whole-heartedly.

First birthday portrait

I have photographed Cristinette's family at least once a year for the past 19 years. WOW! Needless to say, they are not only clients, but friends.

Yesterday I had the fun of photographing Yianni, the youngest, for his first birthday portrait. He was photographed with his sisters, his brothers, parents and grandparents.

The photo was taken in front of his grandparents' home. Yianni has his sister's hat, and is sitting on a keepsake blanket. Each of those personal touches will make this portrait even more special when he looks back at it years from now.

Crystal and Steve

Nativity Pines Christmas Tree Farm was the beautiful location for the wedding ceremony of Crystal and Steve. They were surrounded by family and friends for their June 12 wedding. Crystal's son, Brice, escorted his mom to the altar. When the minister asked, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?" Brice answered, "My sisters and I do". There was an audible "Awww" from the guests and everyone smiled at his answer.

Their wedding day went very smoothly. Tinley of Jubilations was the wedding planner and coordinator, Ray's Party Rental provided the table linens, Dean's Designs was the florist, Cameo Cakes provided the cake and cupcakes, and Accent Mobile DJ Services provided the entertainment for the reception. Hog Wild Pit BBQ served the delicious dinner, and Annie of Nativity Pines kept the entire facility running and the margarita machine full for all the adult guests to enjoy. The children enjoyed filling gift bags with candy from the "candy bar", and everyone had to sample the chocolate fountain treats.

There were many special touches-tubes of bubbles with Crystal and Steve's name imprinted, candy bags with their names on them, and even the silk petals that decorated the tables had their names and wedding date printed on each one. During the reception, when their bouquets decorated the head table, the bride and her attendants wore distinctive wrist bouquet accents.

A poignant moment during the ceremony was when Crystal's son and two daughters, Steve's daughter, the bride, groom and minister each poured colored sand into a beautiful container for a memorial of their wedding day. Crystal and Steve seem made for one another-and their four children round out their new family perfectly. Congratulations to the Kintner family!

July 11th wedding

Congratulations to Kristi and Geoff, who are getting married on 7/11 at Harvest Community Church in west Wichita. Their reception will be at nearby Hawthorne Suites.

Kristi's gown was purchased at Reni's Bridal Salon in Wichita. Geoff's tux will be from Accent Bridal and Tux. FX Motion from Salina will provide the DJ entertainment at the reception, and Ray's Country Catering from Colwich will be providing the reception dinner.

Geoff and Kristi met a little over three years ago through mutual friends. They are a very organized, laid back couple, and I can't wait to photograph their wedding. Congratulations to you both!

Tara and Rob

The Chapel at Central Christian Church in northeast Wichita was the location for the May 30th wedding of Tara and Rob. The Chapel was filled to capacity with 250 guests.

Tinley and her staff at Jubilations Wedding and Event Planning, did a great job making sure that every detail was taken care of. Barb, the wedding coordinator at Central Christian kept everyone organized and on schedule. Moore Flowers provided the beautiful floral bouquets and other floral accents and decorations.

Following the ceremony, the newlyweds were showered with rose petals by their guests when they left the chapel. After a quick ride in a red mustang convertible to the reception at Tallgrass Country Club, the wedding party provided a memorable entrance as they were introduced at the reception. Accent Mobile provided the entertainment while guests visited and enjoyed a delicious dinner at Tallgrass.

We had a few minutes to get out on the golf course for some fun outdoor photos of the bride and groom before they headed back inside to continue the celebration. After Rob and Tara shared a dance as husband and wife, Tara and her dad wowed friends and family with an elegant, well choreographed father-daugher dance. Next up was a rowdy bouquet toss, and then Tara's Delta Gamma sorority sisters serenaded the newlyweds.

Rob and Tara met at Trinity High School, and to quote her dad, "...have been engaged for about seven years". Congratulations, Tara and Rob!

Erin's Bridal Portrait Session

Yesterday was an overcast day in Wichita-perfect weather for photographing Erin in her beautiful wedding gown.

Erin has lived in Wichita all of her life, so it was important to photograph her with the Wichita skyline in the background. She chose the Keeper of the Plains as the area for her bridal portraits, to honor her future husband, Kyle, and his family and their Native American heritage.

Erin is getting married July 24th at St. Vincent de Paul in Andover, with the reception folllowing at The Ville. Her gown was purchased at David's Bridal and Kyle's tux will be from Men's Wearhouse. Other vendors for her wedding include: Complete Music, Cheri's Bakery and A Flower Market.

Erin's mom, Pam, was there throughout the bridal portrait session to share the experience with Erin and to help with her gown. The most humorous part of the session was when Pam threatened to go chase some tourists away, as they were in the background of Erin's photo...I enjoyed sharing the morning with Erin and her mom, and can't wait until July 24th!

May 23 portrait sessions

In the "olden days", I used to anxiously watch for the FedEx truck to deliver my processed film and proofs...it was like Christmas! I couldn't wait to see the pictures that I had envisioned when I took them.

These days, I look forward to seeing the images full screen, on my laptop. Although I could "sneak a peak" when they are taken, I find doing that takes away from my focus on what is happening in that moment-especially during a wedding or reception. For me, I prefer to keep my attention on what it happening in front of the camera lens...not on the instant image on the back of my camera.

Saturday I photographed a grandmother with her son and his family. Multi-generational portraits are awesome, and I always appreciate the opportunity to photograph them. I imagine the baby's grandchildren looking at them one day, in a treasured family album.

After the family portraits were taken at Oak Park in Riverside (where we dodged the many disc golfers!), I headed to Church of the Resurrection in Northeast Wichita. There I photographed a boy scout troup at their last official get-together. Seven of the troup members had attained Eagle Scout status. What an impressive group of young men! We did photos at the park behind the school, at the grotto and the playground. Their scout leader wanted it to be a memorable, fun event, so that when they looked back at their photos from the afternoon, they would fondly remember their Boy Scout experience, and especially their Scout friends. It is always an honor to know that even "in the making", every person there knew that we were creating images that would be treasured for the rest of their lives.

December 4th wedding

Yesterday I met with Madison, who is planning an unbelievably memorable December 4th wedding. She and Jason are getting married at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita, with their reception following at Rolling Hills Country Club. Because of her December wedding date, she is planning a "Christmas theme" wedding.

Madison is exceptionally organized-her gown was purchased in Kansas City, she has booked Stems as her florist, and Cameo Cakes for her wedding cake.

She and Jason will have a stringed quartet and a trumpet at the Cathedral, and a DJ, chocolate fountain and candy bar at the reception. If that weren't enough for the perfect wedding, she has also arranged for a fireworks show during the reception!

Madison has known Jason for about 10 years- he used to play football with her brother. They met up again in recent times, and as they say, "the rest is history!" Congratulations to you both--can't wait to photograph your engagement portrait session!

May 16th Wedding-Ginnie & Michael

Saturday I photographed Ginnie and Michael's wedding at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. There are many beautiful churches and ceremony locations in the region, but my favorite is the Cathedral-it is a special privilege to photograph there.

Despite missing one tux for a groomsman (which they were able to get by 10am), the wedding day went smoothly. Ginnie's son, Skyler was the darling ring bearer, the weather was perfect, and Fr. Sherlock delivered a warm and personal homily.

The photo taken on the church steps was a special request by the bride. It is a blast when the bride and groom don't mind going out in the Kansas wind and having some fun with their photos. (Not too many will request a photo with the bridesmaids throwing their bouquets into the air!) Thank you, Ginnie and Michael, and congratulations!

Mother' Day Wedding

This past Sunday was the wedding day of Sarah and William. Because William's grandmother is 96 years old, they decided to have their wedding ceremony in Newton at the retirement community where she lives. They chose a beautiful gazebo on the grounds for the wedding site.

The couple wanted everything personal and simple, with an emphasis on their love and appreciation of their families. The bride, Sarah, designed and made, or embellished many of the wedding items. She had unique programs, cake cutting knife and server, unity candle, and many other items that she had personalized. (I have no idea how she found time for anything extra, as she graduated from college in Kearney, Nebraska less than 48 hours before her wedding in Kansas!)

The groom's father is the owner and DJ of Totally Legal Sound and Lighting, so it was a special honor to photograph his son's wedding. I have worked with Jon and his business partner, David, at many wedding receptions--they do an exceptionally professional job, with much attention to every detail to make the reception go smoothly for the bride and groom.

I met with Sarah and William in March to go over their wedding plans and ideas. Following that meeting, Sarah posted the following "Vendor Review" on her wedding website:

William and I had decided to hire a NMSU graduate to shoot our wedding, but William's family was nice enough to step in and hire a professional photographer for us. William's father, Jon, is a professional in the wedding business and is personal friends and colleagues with Edye.I can't say enough nice things about Edye. She always replies when I e-mail her, even if it is just a quick update. She was nice enough to meet us at a location convenient for us, even though it was a good bit away from her home town. The quality of her work is far more than I had ever hoped for our wedding and having her there on our special day will definitely be a big help. If there is one thing that drives me crazy, it is vendors that don't pay attention to me when I bring friends and family along for a meeting. Edye was such a professional and even though we brought along William's father, she directed all questions to William and me, and was sincerely interested in what WE wanted for our wedding. I could tell that she was actively listening to my concerns and she had a lot of great ideas to make the most of our awkward ceremony site. I can't wait to work with Edye - I can tell she understood my vision for our day and I know she'll do a great job capturing all our special memories.

Melissa and Jaime's wedding

Saturday, April 25 was the wedding day for Melissa and Jaime's wedding. Their ceremony was held at University Congregational Church in Wichita. Weddings are always full of emotion, but this wedding even more so, as Melissa's father recently passed away. At the beginning of the ceremony, they had a special tribute moment and song in honor of her father.

All of their wedding plans came together beautifully--even the weather cooperated, as we were able to photograph the newlyweds and wedding party outside the Hyatt between rain showers! (Thank you to Artistic Limousine for getting the bride, groom and wedding party to the Hyatt right on schedule!)

The reception entertainment was provided by Ronnie Choy: The Danceman (http://www.thedanceman.net/ ). He had the Redbud Room of the Hyatt rocking, and all 200 guests out on the dance floor celebrating Melissa and Jaime's wedding day.

Planning a Stress Free Wedding

Yes, it can be done!

Following are a few tips to help your wedding to be stress free...or at least, "less stressed".

1. Prepare, Plan and then Let It GO! Trust the professionals that you have hired to do their job--make it a priority for you and your wedding party and families to ENJOY THE DAY.

2. Budget:
a. Flowers: emphasis on bride, bridesmaids, corsages, boutonnieres
b. Cake: smaller or dummy cake for cutting, sheet cake to serve
c. Decorations: use décor available at site, candles, ferns

3. Schedule at ceremony location:
a. photos before or after ceremony? It's your day-YOUR choice!
b. no receiving line (have bride and groom dismiss guests instead)
c. What to do w/Dads? Have them greet guests

4. Schedule for reception: guests arrive first, have bride and groom “announced” when they arrive at the reception: then cut cake first! That way, all the guests will be focused on you as you cut the cake.
a. “cake & punch reception: after cutting cake, bride and groom can stand by cake table to visit w/guests before they get cake
b. dinner & dance reception: formal introduction of bride and groom, then cut cake, bride & groom eat, then walk around visiting guests at their tables, make arrangements for a "kid’s table of activities", then: toasts, garter & bouquet tosses, dances
(if you don’t like garter/bouquet toss, do an anniversary dance to get everyone involved, or give special bouquet to couple longest married)

5. The Wedding Day: no liquor till reception
a. guys: go golf, relax
b. ladies: massage, manicure, hair, makeup—but get to ceremony location in PLENTY of time…don’t rush!
c. EAT something prior to wedding-have a light snack, such as cheese and crackers, available for the wedding party and bride and groom-don't go to your wedding on an empty stomach!

KQHYA Horse Show

Last week I photographed the "School's Almost Out Circuit", a Quarter Horse show in Topeka, Kansas. In recent years, the American Quarter Horse Association has added some wonderful classes for equestrians with disabilities, in addition to the normal slate of classes. EWD riders may show in showmanship, western pleasure, trail and other classes. Thanks to these classes, retired show horses have a new life helping the Equestrians with Disabilities learn new skills, gain confidence and enjoy the fun of horse showing.

Each EWD rider is matched with a horse that complements their ability and a team of helpers and parents to assist in getting saddled, dressed and into the show arena. Horses of Hope, from Baxter Springs, Kanasas had some hardworking and inspiring EWD competitors showing in Topeka. Congratulations to each of you!

May 10th Wedding

On Sunday, May 10th I will be photographing a small, very thoughtful and personal wedding. William and Sarah are getting married in a beautiful outdoor gazebo on the grounds of a Newton retirement center where William's 94 year old grandmother lives. Since his grandmother is unable to travel, they are bringing the wedding to her!

Sarah, a graduate student, met William while attending college in Kearney, Nebraska. Sarah will be graduating just prior to the wedding, and then the couple will be moving to New Mexico following the wedding...their days are exceptionally full!

This terrific couple is sharing their wedding with their parents, siblings, and close relatives. Sarah wants lots of family photos, as it is very rare to have everyone together in one place. After all the family groupings, Sarah, William and I will take a walk along the nature trail for some private portraits of the newlyweds. Then they will head back to a private room at the center for a celebratory family lunch, and for dessert...ice cream wedding cake!

Winter storm wedding: Kasey and Paul

On March 28, 2009, the weather forecasters said the Wichita area was under blizzard conditions until 4pm. However, that didn't stop the 2:00 wedding of Kasey and Paul. They had determined at the rehearsal the night before, that no matter what the weather might do on March 28, they would be married. Paul and Kasey's attitude was reflected throughout their day-everyone able to attend was relaxed and happy.
(There is a reason that I drive a four-wheel drive SUV. It gives me plenty of room to haul my equipment, and no matter what mother nature sends our way, I will get to the wedding or event. Trust me, I was driving through the ice and blowing snow in 4-wheel drive all the way to Wichita...and got to the church for Kasey and Paul's wedding with time to spare. )
Except for the weather (and that the bride's family's home lost electricity due to the ice storm), every moment of their wedding day at Countryside Baptist Church went smoothly. Congratulations to Kasey and Paul- very determined newlyweds!

Evan

Despite the blustery Kansas wind yesterday, I had a lot of fun photographing Evan, a senior graduating from Heights High School. We started at his home with him and with his dog, Chip. From there, we headed to Park City to the skate park for some action shots. Next, Evan had picked out an awesome "Mad Hatter" mural on a building in southwest Wichita for a very unique location. Alyssa & Jacob

Congratulations to Alyssa and Jake on their March 14th wedding! Their wedding was held at Harvest Chapel in southwest Wichita. The reception location was Corporate Caterers Banquet Facility.

Their wedding day went very smoothly. One of my favorite things about their wedding was that Alyssa's dad performed the ceremony...how special that was for everyone! Also, as Jake is in the military, I like the photo of him and his guys outside, with the flag flying above.

Congratulations to Alyssa and Jacob-they are getting married next Saturday, March 14. Their wedding wll be held at Harvest Chapel, in southwest Wichita. After the ceremony, the newlyweds will travel by limousine to the Corporate Caterers Banquet Facility at Douglas and West Street for the reception, with a stop on the way to get some outdoor shots... if the Kansas weather cooperates.
Alyssa's wedding gown was purchased at David's Bridal, and Jacob's tux will be from Men's Wearhouse. Cameo Cakes is creating the delicious wedding cake, and All World DJ will be providing the reception entertainment.
I had the pleasure of photographing Alyssa's sister, Autumn, in October, 2006 at a reception to celebrate her marriage to Jeff. It is a special honor to photograph a second memorable event in the same family.

June 20th wedding

Congratulations to Melissa and Brian! I will be photographing their wedding on June 20th. Although they recently became engaged over the holidays, their wedding plans are coming along great. Melissa got her gown at David's Bridal and their wedding cake will be made by Jeanine Markley. Brian's step-brother will be the officiant, they have a DJ and have tentatively selected Two Brothers BBQ to cater. Both the wedding and reception will be held at Fulton Valley Farms.

Thank you to Erin and Kyle for booking me to photograph their wedding on Friday, July 24. The wedding ceremony will be held at St. Vincent de Paul in Andover, with the reception immediately following at The Ville.

A professional photographer doesn't just "catch moments". A professional photographer sees the moment and then crafts it by creatively using the camera perspective, unique lighting, decisive framing, and so on. The professional, trained photographer refines the emotional palette of a photograph, so that it holds the eye of the viewer, and forms an indelible memory to be treasured for generations to come.

If I buy canvas, brushes, palette and oil paints, I have the "tools of the trade" to be an artist. But just having those tools does not make me an artist...only proper training, practice and years of experience do.

Family Portrait Legacy

Cristinette is the amazing mother of seven children. I became the photographer for her family in 1990, and have photographed each of her children and her family in the ensuing years. April 25th will be a memorable day for Melissa and Jaime, as they are getting married that day at University Congregational Church in Northeast Wichita. Jamie and Adam

Thursday weddings are not common. The only one that I have ever photographed on a Thursday was seven years ago, at Botanica in Wichita. The bride, Jamie, selected that Thursday in June so that she and Adam, her husband, would share their wedding anniversary date with her parents. What a special day...celebrating a new wedding and the anniversary of her parent's wedding...doubly special.

A few days ago I had the fun of photographing Jamie and Adam and their two children, Jamie's parents, two brothers and her sister in law. The photo above is their darling daughter. It was great to see everyone again!

Yesterday I had a woman say to me,"I never forget a face-you photographed our wedding 18 years ago at East Heights in Wichita." She went on to tell others in the room, "Having a photographer who is a woman made such a difference. I was more relaxed, Edye paid more attention to details...things a male photographer just wouldn't see. If you ever need a great photographer-call Edye!"

Although it had been 18 years since her wedding, I was impressed that she remembered the details that I took care of on her once in a lifetime day. Thank you, Shannon, for reminding me of why I love being a wedding photographer!

Rings and things...

In addition to the holidays and all of the festivities and family events that go along with the season, I have been busy designing several wedding albums. Once the couple selects their favorite photos from their wedding images, I lay them out so they tell the wedding day story.

This is also a busy time for planning 2009 weddings. Recently, I enjoyed meeting with Tara and her parents regarding Tara and Rob's May 30th wedding. Tara is planning a beautiful wedding at Central Christian Church. When we spoke, they were still deciding on a reception location, but their plans are coming along very well.

Portraits at your home

Having the opportunity to photograph a family at their home makes the portrait so much more personal than if the same family had their portrait taken in front of a generic background. Years from now, whenever they look at their portrait, it will trigger a flood of memories from that house- the wreath on the door, the family dog or the smell of gingerbread cookies for Christmas.

Recently I heard a quote from Eric Erickson: I am what survives of me. My goal is that the portraits I create will bring to mind fond memories of a special moment in the history of the families photographed.

August 8, 2009 Wedding

8/8/09 will be a memorable day for Meghan and Brandon. They will be getting married that day at the Cathedral in downtown Wichita, with a reception following at Botanica. (I haven't had the pleasure of meeting the bride and groom-to-be yet, but did have the opportunity to meet recently with Meghan's parents. What proud parents-and rightly so!)
So far, they have selected tuxes from Tuxedo Junction, bridemaids' dresses from Uniquely You Bridal, and Harriet Harris will be creating the wedding cake. As you can tell, the wedding plans are coming together beautifully. Congratulations to Meghan and Brandon on your engagement, and I look forward to photographing your wedding.

Family from Texas

One of the highlights of my work, is the privilege of becoming the family photographer after I have photographed the wedding of a couple. Recently, I photographed Sarah and Scott and their darling sons. (I was their wedding photographer, as well as the photographer for Sarah's sister's wedding.) It was such fun to meet their children! Sarah and Scott now live near Dallas, but were in Wichita for the Thanksgiving holiday, visiting Sarah's side of the family.

Their family photos were taken at the Sedgwick County Park, in West Wichita. Despite the "much colder than Texas" weather, we got some great photographs. The photo is of their youngest-with the most remarkable blue eyes I've ever seen.

Erin and Nate

If you have been reading this blog for any length of time you know that I love photographing weddings. Yesterday was no exception...Erin and Nate are an extraordinary couple. Their wedding was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary-or St. Mary's Cathedral as most of us know it. As the bride and groom wanted to make sure that all their guests arrived at the reception ahead of them, we had the entire church to ourselves for a little while after the ceremony and got to take some unique photos. (If you have never been inside the Cathedral, I highly recommend you take the first opportunity to see it. Located at Central and Broadway in downtown Wichita, it was originally dedicated in 1906. They just don't make churches like that anymore!)

The reception was held a few minutes away, at the hall at St. Jude's. Erin and Nate and their families had planned a wonderful day, and things flowed without a glitch. After the dinner, the best man and maid of honor offered some hilarious and heartfelt toasts, then Erin's brother, who was the DJ for the evening, had everyone out on the dance floor with a grand march followed by the "chicken dance".

Congratulations, Erin and Nate! Best wishes for many happy and healthy years together.

The reason that I enjoy my work so much is that capturing images, memories, and moments in time give purpose to my life. Most of my work is people oriented-weddings, family portraits and so on. However, this image was captured right outside my front door, looking west toward our pasture. We are certainly blessed with some "take your breath away" sunsets in Kansas!

Dana and Jim

Last year I photographed the wedding of Dana and Jim at Eastminster Presbyterian and also their reception at Dana's parents' home. A few days ago I photographed the newlyweds in their lovely new home. In addition to some traditional poses, we also included a few with their cute dog and beautiful cat. Since they had just remodeled their kitchen, we even took a few fun photographs in there. Thank you, Jim and Dana, and congratulations on your first year of marriage!

Misha and Josh

November 8 was a happy day for Misha and Josh. They were married at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton, Kansas. They enjoyed a carriage ride (Country Boys Carriage 316.283.2636) to the Newton VFW for their reception. Their wedding cake was beautifully done by Artistic Cakes (artisticcakes.com) and the fun atmosphere for their reception dance was created by Totally Legal Sound and Lighting (316.264.4093). Misha and Josh were so relaxed and just enjoyed the day and being with family and friends (despite a few minor problems like the maid of honor's dress trying to fall apart!) Congratulations to a great couple--it was a privilege to photograph your wedding and reception.

Wedding Albums

In the nearly twenty years that I have been a professional photographer, wedding albums have gotten much more diverse. Traditional albums have leather covers and beautiful pages that mat each photo or grouping of photos. The album page has a decorative, reinforced border with double reinforcing at the corners--albums guaranteed to protect and creatively display your wedding memories for many decades.
Also available are Collage albums like the sample shown above. With literally thousands of design options, no two albums are alike. Each page is a photo collage, and is rigidly mounted to protect and preserve the integrity of the images.
Another option is having a wedding book created. Just like a hardcover photo book you might purchase at a store, your wedding images may become a book. The wedding book concept is especially popular for parents of the bride and groom. Brides also enjoy having one to easily take along to work or family events to show off her once-in-a-lifetime wedding, without the worry of mishandling the larger custom album. The books come in a variety of sizes and make treasured gifts for the wedding party as well.
Part of the personalized service that I provide to wedding couples is album design. The bride and groom simply choose their favorite images and I do the rest. Once the album design is completed and the couple has given their approval, images are ordered, albums are sent for binding, etc. Typically, within six weeks of their selection of wedding photo favorites, the newlyweds have their custom wedding album- to enjoy for generations to come.

History in the Making

What an election! Regardless of your political affiliation, you have to admit that this has been a history making year.

I spent the last two days photographing preschool students; three, four and five year old children. (The photos above are a few outtakes-just for fun.)

When I look at their beautiful faces, all I can see is the potential, promise and opportunity that their futures hold. At this point in their young lives, the children have no concept of the momentous election taking place. However, I hope one day their mom or dad will point at their preschool photo and tell them of the history in the making on the very day that photo was taken.

Kate

Two weeks ago I photographed Kate for her senior portraits, on the same afternoon that I photographed her entire family. We only did a few shots that day, with plans to get together for more later. Well, that day arrived with beautiful weather-no wind, blue sky and fall colors everywhere.

Kate's first outfit was a striking red formal dress. In keeping with her spontaneous personality, she did not want to wear any shoes with the formal, and went barefoot. She commented that she loved the falling leaves--all the red and golden colors.

Next we went to a friend's home with a lovely pond, and from there to a Wichita park. . . Thank you, Kate, I had a lot of fun and we got some fantastic shots!

Class of '63 Reunion

The East High School Class of 1963 enjoyed their 45th reunion this past weekend. It was wonderful to see them catching up with one another-it seemed there was constant hugging and smiles. The reunion dinner was held at Tallgrass Country Club-always an elegant choice for an event.

For the photos, we started with a group picture of the entire class of around 90 individuals. Then were the smaller classes from the various elementary and junior high schools. Following the many planned group photos, I captured candid moments of friends visiting, couples dancing and friends reminiscing.

The highlight of the evening, for me, was when a kind gentleman stopped for a quick chat after the group photos. He explained that he used to be a photographer and also had taught photography. He commented that my organizational and posing skills really showed up in arranging the large class photo, and that I made everyone feel relaxed and comfortable. He did offer an interesting insight, especially from a male perspective, saying,"I truly believe that women do a superior job as photographers. A woman is more attentive to details and (typically) has better communication skills". In concluding his observation he offered the finest compliment,"You have a PhD in photography psychology!"

Rita and kids

This past Saturday I got to photograph Rita and her son and daughter. They have a new home, so we started with pictures out in front of the house, then moved to their large backyard. Their house borders a natural wildlife area, so we got to do a little hiking in the fall grasses for some more unique photos. Even their two happy dogs were included in some of the images. (I have been the photographer for Rita and her children since 1994... Thank you, Rita!)
